Highlights of the May Meeting

MikeD-SteveA

SAME-MSP President Steve Alm (r) thanks Mike DeWeese of National Weather Service's North Central River Forecast Center (l) for his very educational presentation about the NWS's New Ensemble River Hydrographs Experimental Guidance Product.

Mike discussed the technical aspects of the NWS’s Hydrometeorological Prediction Center’s (HPC) Experimental Precipitation Confidence Interval Forecasts which is based on their new Ensemble Hydrograph methodology.  The goals of this new methodology is fourfold: to produce more accurate products by incorporating advanced hydrologic science into the NWS model; to provide products with forecast horizons two weeks or further into the future; to create more information that is useful to assess risk to flooding; and to provide more specific and timely information on fast-rising floods with increased lead time.

This meeting was a joint meeting with the Minnesota Flood Plain Managers Association.  We had a great attendance of over 60 guests.  Thanks for the great turnout!

LTC-SSG-COLAlso at the meeting, SSG Lintonen presented the Post with the Streamer Awards that the Post earned this past year, including the Distinguished Post Award.  SSG was the Post's representative at the recent SAME National Conference where the awards were presented.

The Post also recognized and thanked COL Jon Christensen for his gracious support and assistance during his past three years as the USACE St. Paul District Commander.  COL Christensen will soon be moving on to his new assignment, a second stint in Iraq.

Steve at Harriet Bishop SchoolOn Friday May 28th Steve Alm (standing on left) and Wayne Wambold delivered a check and congratulations letter to Cheri Warmka (standing on right) at Harriet Bishop Elementary School in Savage, Minnesota.  Wayne said "It was great to go and meet Cheri and her students and witness their excitement and enthusiasm".

Harriet Bishop GrantOn Monday June 6th Beth Keister (r) and Chris Afdahl delivered a check and congratulations letter to Dustin Russell at Cityview Performing Arts Magnet in Minneapolis, Minnesota.  The point of this special project was to have the students create a 10- Step Rube Goldberg project incorporating simple machines which also includes a field trip to "The Works" museum.  This program encourages minorities and female students in the area of engineering in a school that has approximately 88% of the students on the free and reduced lunch program.  The "Rube Goldberg" project is part of the Gateway to Technology (GTT) engineering course offered after school and in the summer.  This project supports the MN state standards that require 7th and 8th graders to be able to generate and refine a number of scientific questions in order to come up with a final solution.  .
