Field Trip Presentation and Tour of
St. Anthony Falls Hydropower Project

Presentation Synopsis:

St Anthony Falls Hydropower project is a 12 megawatt (MW) hydroelectric project located on the Mississippi River in downtown Minneapolis.  The project site has generated hydropower for almost 120 years and in 2000-2001 the aging St. Anthony Falls dam was replaced with a new dam about 30 feet upriver of the existing structure.  Xcel Energy recently completed the re-licensing process for the project, including the development of the upper island into a park with an access bridge that gives the public access to the island and riverfront area and up-close views of the main spillway, horseshoe dam and the downtown skyline.  The presentation will include a description of the colorful history of the people, features, and events that shaped the St Anthony Falls site.  The presentation and tours will be hosted by representatives from Xcel Energy, the University of Minnesota's St Anthony Falls Laboratory, Hess Roise and Company, and Barr Engineering.

Presenter Bios:

Rob Olson is a regulatory affairs specialist for Xcel Energy, and has been instrumental in the negotiation and implementation of hydropower licensing and license conditions at St Anthony Falls Hydropower Project, as well as Xcel Energy's 19 hydropower facilities in Wisconsin.

Susan Larson is director of project services for Xcel Energy's Engineering and Construction department.  She has a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Minnesota, and manages a number of high profiles projects for Xcel, including the St Anthony Falls Water+Power Park development, and the High Bridge MERP projects.

Omid Mohseni, Ph.D., P.E., P.H., is Associate Director for Applied Research and Engineering at the University of Minnesota's St Anthony Falls Laboratory.  His research interests and publications include environmental hydraulics, lake and river hydrodynamics, hydraulic structures, and watershed modeling and management.  Omid has been instrumental in the Lab's efforts to develop outdoor research channels to advance the study of erosion mechanics and the effectiveness of natural erosion control measures.

Bill Forsmark, P.E., is a civil engineer and principal with Barr Engineering Company who specializes in hydropower and water resources projects.  Bill has been involved with design and inspection projects at St Anthony Falls hydropower project over the past 20 years.  Bill is the engineer of record for the Water+Power Park.

Joint Meeting with the Minnesota Association of Flood Plain Managers

Pat Foley (left) and Suzanne Jiwani (below) are thanked by Post President Bill Forsmark for their fine presentations at the joint meeting.

Pat gave a very  informative talk about the efforts underway by the Corps of Engineers and FEMA to update criteria for the certification of levees.

Suzanne discussed the efforts underway to update the flood zone maps that FEMA issues to define flood palins.

The joint meeting was held at the Ft. Snelling Officer's Club, adjacent to the MSP airport.  The meeting venue was well suited to our needs and the food was very good; many positive remarks were made about this location.  If the MSP Post considers this venue for possible future meetings, the meetings would likely have to be on Wednesdays rather than Thursdays.   Please let us know your thoughts/feelings about having Wednesday meeting at this location in the future.
