Field Trip
Presentation and Tour of
St. Anthony Falls Hydropower Project
Presentation Synopsis:
St Anthony Falls Hydropower project is a 12 megawatt
(MW) hydroelectric project located on the Mississippi River in
downtown Minneapolis. The project site has generated
hydropower for almost 120 years and in 2000-2001 the aging St.
Anthony Falls dam was replaced with a new dam about 30 feet upriver
of the existing structure. Xcel Energy recently completed the
re-licensing process for the project, including the development of
the upper island into a park with an access bridge that gives the
public access to the island and riverfront area and up-close views
of the main spillway, horseshoe dam and the downtown skyline.
The presentation will include a description of the colorful history
of the people, features, and events that shaped the St Anthony Falls
site. The presentation and tours will be hosted by
representatives from Xcel Energy, the University of Minnesota's St
Anthony Falls Laboratory, Hess Roise and Company, and Barr
Engineering.
