An Engineering Look at Minnesota’s Historic Bridges

Steve Olson
HNTB

Presentation Synopsis:

Minnesota has approximately 200 historic highway bridges scattered throughout the state.  Some are landmark structures such as Duluth’s Aerial Lift Bridge, Minneapolis’ Stone Arch Bridge, Stillwater’s Lift Bridge, and the Mendota Bridge over the Minnesota River), others are less recognized, but each has a story.  The stories for these bridges give us a glimpse of how civil engineering has changed over the past 125 years in Minnesota.

Using a handful of bridge examples, this presentation will highlight how our “engineering grandparents” tackled the soft soils of the Red River Valley, how they recycled a Mississippi River bridge, and how they created world record concrete bridges.

These bridges also help us appreciate how materials have changed with time.  Concrete has changed from a simple 1:2:4 mix ratio to today’s sophisticated product with tailored characteristics.  Riveted iron structures have given way to steel structures with bolted and welded details.

Looking ahead, the presentation will conclude with a summary of Mn/DOT’s approach to preserving historic bridges on the trunk highway system.

Presenter Bio:

Steve Olson has over twenty years of bridge engineering experience and manages the Bridge and Structures Group in the Minneapolis Office of HNTB.  He chairs ASCE-Minnesota’s History and Heritage Committee and is a member of its Structural Technical Committee.  He received undergraduate and graduate engineering degrees from the University of Minnesota where he teaches a graduate course in bridge engineering.

January 2007 Meeting

Ken Haberman (r), President of Landmark Environmental, is thanked by Post Vice President Jim Mosner (l) for giving an enlightening presentation on the topic of Phase I Environmental Assessments, which are sometimes referred to by the EPA as "All Appropriate Inquires" or "AAI".  Ken provided a nice background on how Phase I Assessments evolved, as well as information and practical advice on the application of the final AAI Rule and how it compares to the ASTM Standard Practice E 1527-05.

If you know someone who may be deserving of a scholarship, please urge the young person to apply for one the Post’s $1100 scholarships.  Applicants are rated in a number of areas including academics, school activities, and community activities.  There are two categories of scholarships described as follows:

  • Category I - High school seniors and college students who are children, grandchildren, or siblings of members of the Minneapolis-St. Paul Post and who will be registered as full time college students in the fall of the year of selection.

  • Category II – SAME Student Members who belong to a Post or a SAME Student Chapter.

Typically three scholarships are awarded annually.  If there are worthy applicants in both categories, two scholarships will be awarded in Category I and one scholarship will be awarded in Category II.  Under Category I, students pursuing any college discipline are welcome to apply.  Under Category II, a student must be an undergraduate student who is pursuing engineering or science related courses or a student who is duly enrolled as a member of the ROTC program in secondary schools, colleges, and universities; and must be either a student member of our Post or a member of a duly sponsored SAME Student Chapter.  Applicants who do not receive a scholarship may reapply the following year.

A committee of Post members evaluate the applications.  All applications are kept confidential, and only the winners are announced.  For additional information, please contact Ben Tustison at 763-205-2651.  Scholarship Application Packages can be downloaded from the Post’s website at:
