Fiscal Year 2008 is starting off in a quite challenging manner financial-wise for many Federal agencies that provide products and services to our Nation's constituents.  Congress has not yet passed the bills required to fully fund the Corps.  Colonel Jon Christensen, the Commander of the St. Paul District US Army Corps of Engineers, will discuss the District's upcoming work program and try to shed some light on what might be the contracting opportunities in the near future.  In addition, Col. Christensen will discuss WRDA updates and authorized projects for the St. Paul District.

Presenter Bio:

COL Jon L. Christensen assumed command of the St. Paul District on June 8, 2007, becoming the district’s 62nd commander and district engineer.  Prior to assuming this command, he served as program director for the electricity sector at the Corps of Engineers Gulf Region Division in Iraq.

Justin Mug from JimJustin Waldron (l) receives the Presenter's Mug from Post President Jim Mosner (r) in appreciation of his terrific presentation on the new Texas Stadium, which will be the largest domed stadium in the world when it's completed in 2009.  In addition to an overview of all aspects of this immense project, he also provided fascinating detail about the foundation and structural systems that will support the massive movable roof as well as workings of the mechanical and electrical systems that will be utilized.  He also covered a bit of history on the evolution of movable roof systems that have been developed for other stadiums in the country.

Justin's presentation kept us all enthralled for nearly an hour, and he could have gone on longer if time had allowed.

Handing out items from Care PackageThanks to our members who donated items for the "Care Packages for our Troops" collection at last month's meeting.  Those items were added to the other items collected that St. Paul District USACE office and sent to the District's personnel who are deployed in Iraq.  The Care Packages will be much appreciated.

Join the Engineering Team of the Future! -- Looking for Judges for Future City Comp

FCC LogoAs mentioned in last month's newsletter, our Post has volunteered to sponsor a special award category for the team that best addresses "Readiness for Natural and Man-made Disasters".

We need the assistance of several volunteers for the morning of January 26, 2008 to help judge and select the team to receive our special award.

If you are willing to help judge this special award category, please contact Jim Mosner at 651-290-5512 or at james.b.mosner@usace.army.mil

Join the team that makes a difference!

The University of Minnesota Department of Civil Engineering is seeking mentors for its spring 2008 Capstone Design course.  Capstone Design is one of the final courses taken by most civil engineering undergraduates at the university.  By working with practitioners in the field, students gain experience solving real-life engineering projects.  Mentors-practitioners play an important role helping students address open-ended problems, propose a solution, and present this solution to the community.

Mentors should be practicing professionals from the public or private sector.  They meet with a group of four to five students weekly during the fifteen-week course, either at the university or at the mentor's job site.  The projects they propose can come from any area of civil engineering, but must involve an economic component.

The Capstone Design course has been a big success due to the interest and involvement of practitioners in the program.  If you would like to participate, contact Professor Heinz Stefan at 612-625-2810 (stefa001@umn.edu) or Paul Eickenberg (peickenberg@wenck.com)

For more info see the linked Dept of Civil Engineering's flyer or visit the U's web page at http://www.ce.umn.edu/alumni/capstone_mentor.html.

As mentioned in previous newsletters, we are interested in your ideas for meeting presentation topics as well as any leads that you may have for interesting presenters.  Please contact Paul Eickenberg, our Programs Coordinator, at 763.479.4253 or peickenberg@wenck.com with ideas or suggestions that you may have for upcoming technical presentations.

Some of the areas/topics that we are especially interested in that help with our Post Award goals are:

  1. Combat Engineering (e.g., RED HORSE, Seabees, and Army Engineer Units)

  2. Emerging technologies

  3. Efficient design and construction

  4. Small business, e.g. Mentor-Protégé

  5. Environmental sustainability & stewardship, including green building design considerations

  6. Facility and infrastructure life cycle management

  7. Corporate information management, e.g. GIS, GeoBase, other Knowledge Management programs

  8. Water resources planning and management, including water and wastewater
