Building Big: The Latest Technology
in Stadium Design
Justin Waldron, P.E.
Structural Engineering
Manager
Uni-Systems, LLC
1/2-PDH for this Presentation
Presentation Synopsis:
The Dallas Cowboys are building a new
stadium to replace Texas Stadium to be
completed in 2009. The $1 billion stadium
will be the NFL’s largest, featuring the
latest in technology and will be the owner
of numerous world records when complete.
The stadium will feature two steel arches
that will be the longest spanning building
elements in the world, a bi-parting
retractable roof that the arches to extreme
angles, and an enormous glass clad operable
wall system at each end zone. The
presentation will highlight the custom
designed end connections and foundations for
the arches that span nearly a quarter of a
mile. To scale the arches with a roof
panel, a new drive system was developed that
will be the first of its kind for stadiums
worldwide. The schematic design process will
be revisited, with due consideration given
to the precedent set by previous drive
systems, which ultimately led to the rack
and pinion tractor drives chosen. However,
to reliably move a massive structure, it
requires more than just an elegant drive
system. The structure itself must be able
to relieve stress via large displacements to
provide a dependable load path.

Brian Fischer (l) receives the Presenter's
Mug
from Post President Jim Mosner (r) in
appreciation of his exciting presentation on
the use of GIS technology in two projects
that are of interest to everyone. One
project involves the use of GIS tools to
help Map and depict in a user-friendly
manner the level of flood forecasts in the
cities of Fargo ND and Morehead MN.
The other application is being developed for
the Metropolitan Mosquito Control District
(MMCD) and involves a Web GIS solution to
give the public and internal staff access to
GIS information for mosquito breeding sites
and treatments records.

Engineers Week Future City Competition (FCC).
Volunteer judges are needed during the months of December
and January. For complete details see
http://www.successbeyond.org/FCCjudges.htm.
The competition is comprised of three judged parts:
-
Computer design & layout using SimCity software
-
A 300-500 word essay on an assigned engineering-related topic
-
Building a table top scale model of a section of the city and a
team oral presentation of their city and model
2007-2008 Timeline for Judging Activities:
-
Judge computer simulation
December 3 or December 12, 2007, from
4:00-8:00pm (you select one or both) at
FAIR Middle School, Crystal
-
Judge essays between January 12 to 16, 2008 from your home
computer
-
Judge the final events at the Minnesota Competition
on January 26, 2008, 8:00-NOON, at
University of St. Thomas, St. Paul campus
Send your contact info (name, company, work phone,
work address, and email) to: Colleen Feller at

In addition to the above mentioned need for Judges, our Post will
also be sponsoring a special award category for the team that best
addresses "Readiness for Natural and Man-made Disasters". We
need the assistance of several additional volunteers on the morning
of January 26, 2008 to help select the team to receive our special
award. If you are willing to help with this portion of the
event, please contact Jim Mosner at 651-290-5512 or at

The Post has
a goal to earn at least three National SAME Streamer Awards
this year. In order to complete requirements for the
Education and Training Streamer and the Outreach and
Communications Streamer we are requesting your assistance in
gathering information to help us document how our members
(that's YOU) are involved professionalism-related activities
outside of your normal job. Thus, we need a summary of
your activities in any or all of the following endeavors:
-
Submission of articles to The
Military Engineer or other professional journals.
-
Involvement in mentoring activities for
K-12 (includes science fairs, Learning for Life,
MATHCOUNTS, Future City Competition, other types of
classroom visits, or presentations pertaining to the
sciences or engineering).
-
Providing mentoring activities for
college students (includes Student Chapter activities,
mentoring for course work, assisting with Capstone
projects).
Please submit
information to Wayne Wambold
(wwambold@sehinc.com)
by the end of December 2007.
For the first items,
please send a copy of your article or abstract along with date of
submission and/or publication and which journal or conference it was
for.
For the mentoring
activities we request a brief description and approximate number of
hours involved.
Thank you for
your cooperation. We appreciate your dedication to the
Post’s success in the Awards and Recognition Program.
